US SANCTIONS ON SUDAN
Since 1997, the United States has enacted a series of legislative and executive order sanctions against Sudan. Arguments on both sides of the sanctions debate are marked by a disappointing lack of analysis on the impact of unilateral sanctions on the ground to substantiate their causes. Chinese mining companies have followed closely on the heels of Chinese oil companies in their successful penetration of the African mining market. Notwithstanding the recent global economic crisis, China&rsquos soaring demand for resources is the key driving force shaping China&rsquos new political and economic engagement with the global economy and indeed the African continent. Chinese mining companies bring with them a new economic model in doing business in an area which traditionally has been the preserve of Western mining interests for decades. The report attempts to illustrate the extent of Chinese mining interests in Africa, their modus operandi and the challenge they pose to non-Chinese investors on the continent.
